"CIVILIAN REFLECTIONS"
Our monthly column written by students
and staff at the John H. Sununu
Youth Services Center

March 2008

It was a small favor, one veteran reaching out
to another with a final request.
A dying man asking, “Could you play TAPS at my funeral?”

Did they know each other?  Doesn’t matter.
Did they serve together?  Doesn’t matter
Did they share a common branch of the military?  Doesn’t matter.
Did they serve under the same Commander-in-Chief?  Doesn’t matter.
Did they serve during wartime or peacetime?  Doesn’t matter.

What matters is their status as veterans.

What matters is the unspoken responsibility to honor
those who have served.

What matters is the haunting notes of TAPS
surrounding a grieving family.

What matters is that a fellow American
plays this last good-bye.

What matters is that a last request is fulfilled.

What matters is that there is no greater tribute
than recognition from a fellow patriot.

What matters is that when the next request comes in
that you’ll step up.
What matters is that you’ll volunteer to play TAPS.
YOU MATTER!!

We are looking for participants to honor the heroes of our
country.  If you play a bugle or trumpet, WE NEED YOU!!!!

If you are willing to volunteer to assist in the opening
ceremonies, WE NEED YOU!!!!

American Legionnaires,
members of VFW, Boy Scouts,
or any group that has an honor guard and
would be willing to be part of our opening ceremonies,
WE NEED YOU!!!!
